LactoGG is the world’s most-researched, premier probiotic strain with nearly 700 scientific papers and nearly 200 clinical trials supporting its claims to its health benefits.

LactoGG is a probiotic. It is a special, unique good bacterium, which has been proven to promote health in the human being.

The scientific name for LactoGG’s probiotic strain is Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG (ATCC53103) or ” Lactobacillus GG” for short. LactoGG is the original, specific probiotic strain isolated by two Boston scientists , Prof. Sherwood L. Gorbach and Dr. Barry Goldin, in 1985, from the intestinal tract of a healthy human subject. Its ”GG” identity is named after its two discovers.

LactoGG is a vegetable capsule containing 20 billion live ”GG” bacteria and inulin, a vegetable fibre which acts as the food for the live bacteria. It does not contain yeast, sodium, preservatives, artificial food coloring, artificial flavoring, sweeteners or sugar. Its contents are all NATURAL.

LACTOGG® is pronounced as “lac-toh-G-G“.

Little Percy’s Experience with LactoGG from Mama Grace, a Member of the Health Champions Team

I started searching high and low for LactoGG in the beginning of April 2011 when I heard that this might help Percy in his eczema. By this time, Percy had been off his steroid creams for 6.5 months. He was suffering so horribly and the wretched steroid-induced eczema made us feel more like we were in a torture chamber having to daily put Percy through his hellish bath routine when mere water would sting him so badly on his scores of raw, open eczema wounds.

Just 8 days into taking LactoGG, and Percy’s rashes were almost gone! Honestly, for someone who has been painfully struggling with eczema for the last 30+ years, and armed only with photo-therapy, steroids and anti-histamines that did not heal the skin, this was a Miracle. I was speechless and was so grateful. Praise God!!!!! Of course, it doesn’t mean every single person suffering from eczema and TSW will recover in the same way Percy did, but we were speechless, honestly.

He now hop-skips to the bathroom and happily prepares to bathe (he calls it boat boat) because there is no more pain from the open and weeping raw wounds he once had!!!!! I am so happy!!!! Go, eczema, gone!!!

Darling little Percy’s eczema has been gone for months now, and his allergies greatly improved, even when we were out of stock for LactoGG and he was not taking it! Praise God for his improved immune system!!!

Please read much much more about what steroid creams do to eczema and what Topical Steroid Addiction and Topical Steroid Withdrawal are in www.ITSAN.org.

Please scroll right down for more stories of how we battled food allergies and eczema with LactoGG in 2011.

By the way, LactoGG is a FOOD, not a drug!!!

Contents of Each Capsule

At the point of manufacture, the factory in USA loads each capsule with 50 billion cfu (colony-forming units) of LIVE Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, so that their guarantee of 20 billion cfu of LIVE Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in each capsule will be fulfilled, even if it reaches our hands 2 years later! This also means that even if we bring our LactoGG all around our tropical island in our warm weather, it will still last for 2 months, and we will still be able to enjoy a minimum of 20 billion cfu of LIVE Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in each capsule.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103) probiotic strain 20 billion CFU, inulin 240 mg, as stated in MIMS, the compendium of supplements and medicines for doctors.

LactoGG is casein-free. This means that LactoGG does NOT contain any trace of cow milk protein. It contains a highly purified pharmaceutical grade of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, and its probiotic identification number is ATC 53103. This means that LactoGG can be safely consumed by anyone with known cow milk allergy and in fact, has been medically studied and proven to help those with milk allergy so they are less allergic.

LactoGG works by modulating the immune system in allergy, such as in atopic eczema, which affects too many babies and children these days especially in our modern, civilised society. LactoGG should be consumed over at least 6-8 weeks, and you will notice fewer and less frequent exacerbations or eczema flares, and less need for medical intervention.

However, this site does not replace your doctor’s consultation and does not offer any medical advice.

To Ensure You Enjoy the Maximum Benefits While Taking Probiotics

To see results and enjoy all the many many health benefits of LactoGG, you will need to ensure the following criteria are ALL fulfilled.

  1. You are taking this particular strain of Lactobacillus.
    • Other strains of probiotic may be good for health, and would help relieve conditions such as diarhhoea or constipation, but
    • Will not have the same functions and benefits as this particular strain, the Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG
  2. You are taking good bacteria that are ALIVE at the point of consumption.
    • If the Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG bacteria is already DEAD when it is consumed, it will not give you the benefits as stated by the World Health Organisation and the independent, now more than 800 clinical studies done on the benefits of LactoGG.
    • This is why the factory loads 50 billion cfu of LIVE Lacto GG at the point of manufacture, so there is at least 20 billion cfu ALIVE in each capsule when we take it.
    • This is why Grace repeats again: Take good care of your friendly bacteria and let them sleep in a nice cold refrigerator!
  3. You are taking an adequate dosage of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG.
    • Taking freshly made yoghurt, Vitagen or Yakult will not give you as much health benefits because there aren’t that many LIVE cfu of bacteria in the product. (Plus, there is so much sugar in Vitagen and Yakult that you’ll probably
    • Of course, we don’t know what strains of good bacteria are in the food as well.

Good Storage Practices to Ensure the Longevity of Your Bacteria Friends

Be sure to store your stash of LactoGG below 23 degrees Celcius.

  • In the Fridge
If they are kept in the refrigerator, they can last for 2 years or even more. This means that they are still ALIVE when you consume them because all the LIVE colony-forming units of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG will go into hibernation in the cold temperatures of the fridge, and then this same amount will be still alive and well, when you remove them from the fridge years later.
  • In our Handbags as we Waltz around Outdoors in Tropical Singapore
If, like Grace, you need to bring them out wherever you go, in your handbag, in the tropical sweltering heat of hot and humid Singapore, then do note that they still are able to stay alive for 2 months. (Grace needs to have an ever-ready supply in her bag so Percy can take one 15 minutes before he eats his forbidden foods that he is allergic to, like milk-based products, seafood, etc.)

Why Chilled Storage is Crucial

As it is essential that we consume probiotic while they are ALIVE so they can coloise our gut and do the wonderful work that they are meant to do, storing them in a chilled facility becomes an important factor to ensure, so that we will enjoy the meximum amount of benefit from our box of LactoGG.

Once again, even though it is stated on every LactoGG box that each capsule contains 20 billion cfu of live Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, the factory actually loads 50 billion cfu of LIVE Lacto GG at the point of manufacture, so as to provide a buffer, and ensure that there is at least 20 billion cfu ALIVE in each capsule when we take it. And because the packaging for LactoGG is designed for “Climatic Zone 4” which is a packaging designed to allow the bacteria inside to survive our much harsher climate than that of the temperate climates.

This means that the capsule will survive TWO months in the open without refrigeration, and we will stlll be able to enjoy what we are promised: 20 billion cfu of live Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in each capsule. The reason why we want to keep it stored in refrigeration is because when stored in the fridge, all the bacteria that is alive will go into a state of hibernation, and the amount of bacteria that is alive when the capsule is chilled will remain the same, years after we remove the capsule from the fridge.

This is the reason why in Health Champions, we insist on CHILLED storage for all our LactoGG stock the minute we receive them from the supplier. However, this does not mean that you have to bring the  LactoGG around in a cooler box or bag with ice packs because they can definitely survive the trip all around Singapore, and can do so for 2 months in our hot, tropical climate.

We used to insist on Chilled Delivery because we worry that the LactoGG parcels that we send out to you may possibly be sitting in the super-heated back ends of metal delivery trucks, or sit in hot warehouses of the courier companies while in transit before they are delivered to you, and this long periods of exposure to heat will kill our precious bacteria. However, as we had many problems with the delivery courier company that provided Chilled Delivery for us, we will no longer be providing chilled delivery for our LactoGG. Instead, we have engaged a new courier service that will provide Same-Day delivery service. This means that your parcel will be sent to you within the same day it has been picked up from us at Health Champions.

More Basic Information

  • Our body has more bacteria cells than human cells.
  • Our body’s bacteria are crucial to our health.
  • They are our invisible body armour.
  • They educate our immune system.
  • Scientists and doctors now recognise that we can make use of the ability of bacteria to communicate with each other to control infections as well as promote health.
  • They communicate with each other using specific molecules unique to each strain.
  • They communicate with other bacterial species using another communication molecule.

“…So, we’ve targeted those systems to make the molecules work better. Remember you have these 10 times or more bacterial cells in you or on you, keeping you healthy. What we’re also trying to do is to beef up the conversation of the bacteria that live as mutualists with you, in the hopes of making you more healthy, making those conversations better, so bacteria can do things that we want them to do better…” ~ Professor Dr. Bonnie Bassler, the Faculty Director in Princeton University, New Jersey and the 2009 President of the American Society of Microbiology

Recommended Dosages

We always refer to the LactoGG Monograph for this, as it states that clinical research shows that for LactoGG to present results in eczema sufferers, 10 – 80 billion cfu of LIVE Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG bacteria should be ingested daily, and this dosage is the same for all infants to adults, as long as this is a person battling eczema.
Therefore, we recommend taking 2 capsules of LactoGG daily for eczema warriors as there are about 40 billion cfu of bacteria still alive when we receive our stock from the local Singapore LactoGG distributor, and we refrigerate all our LactoGG stock once we receive them, keeping the figure of LIVE bacteria constant once we receive them, to prevent any more precious bacteria from dying when stored in a non-refrigerated environment.

How to Give LactoGG to Babies

This is Grace’s recommendation as I deal with my own little boy Percy, and have now met hundreds of mommies with young babies who have been giving LactoGG to their little ones from the time they are infants, in the course of my work with the Eczema Support Group.
I DO NOT recommend pouring the contents of the capsule into a milk bottle and then feeding the milk to a baby as much is wasted, clinging onto the sides of the milk bottle even after baby finishes his milk.

For babies younger than 6 months old:

Instead, I usually advise mommies to open the capsule, pour a little of the contents of the capsule out onto a spoon that is semi-filled with either breast milk or baby’s milk / water / juice. Then, mix the contents of the LactoGG capsule into the liquid on your spoon, and then spoon-feed your baby. Do this until Baby finishes all the contents of the capsule.

For babies / children older than 6 months old:

Mommies can open the capsule and pour a little of the contents of the capsule at a time onto Baby’s tongue. Once Baby tastes the powdery contents of the LactoGG capsule, he will open his mouth and ask for more. How does it taste like? It’s yummy 🙂 and tastes like what all Singaporeans know: Horlicks, or, a cereal-biscuit mix 🙂 There is no added sugar at all, and so we are totally happy feeding LactoGG to babies, unlike many other probiotic products which have a fair bit of sugar mixed in.

For older children and adults:

My boys and the rest of us adults in my family simply chew our LactoGG capsules whole, and swallow them. 🙂 They’re yummy!
LactoGG’s “Side Effects” Explained
Interestingly, when one experiences effects other than what we hope to see, it actually means that the good bacteria are working in our intestinal tract! Here are the most common side effects:
  • Loose stools / Diarrhoea
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Cramps
  • Rashes
  • Acne
If we experience any of the above the adverse effects, and they are relatively minor and do not persist for more than 14 days, then we should be celebrating these side effects! Temporary reactions such as minor bloating or a mild laxative or constipating effect are signs that the beneficial bacteria are remodeling, detoxifying and improving the gut environment
LactoGG, Leaky Gut and The Die Off Effect (Grace’s layman version)

It is believed that once we have taken antibiotics or steroids before, we will have a leaky gut. Some schools of thought say 99% of us have a leaky gut anyway. Some say babies are born with a leaky gut. Just what is it?

Again in my attempt to simplify everything, a leaky gut is when our intestinal walls become “holey”. So the dirty stuff inside the intestinal wall in the intestines, the toxins from undigested, and un-eliminated food etc, LEAK OUT. And these toxins then get absorbed into our blood stream and are then efficiently distributed all over our body. Hmm  Doesn’t sound good huh.

PLUS, since the wall is now holey, it is like a sieve, and foods that have not been completely digested also leak out and get absorbed in a half-digested state. Our bloodstream and immune system look at these partially digested proteins and 3 things happen:

  1. They think, “You are not food!”,
  2. Think they are real threats cos they cannot identify them, and then
  3. Our immune reacts to them!

And this immune reaction is? An inflammatory, allergic reaction, of course.

So the idea is NOT to now quickly go off and get allergy tests done, but to REPAIR THAT HOLEY WALL, since the root of the problem is not all those undigested food, but our HOLEY WALL and misinformed immune system!

So, in order that we build up our intestinal wall and plug up those holes, we can take LactoGG that has been documented to be able to build up and strengthen the internal lining of the intestinal wall, and also communicate with our immune system to re-educate it.

And because these good guys (the probiotic, the good bacteria) come in by the truckloads, the bad guys die off. This is when the story gets a little complicated – when the baddies die.

The Die Off reaction or effect is actually known as the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. In our situation, this happens when we eat something that gets rid of the baddies in our gut, like LactoGG and antibiotics. Who are these baddies? Viruses, bacteria, parasites, candida, etc. When they die, the toxins from these dying baddies are released, and if we don’t poo poo (move our bowels) properly and get rid of these toxins, and with our HOLEY intestinal wall, we may find ourselves facing these toxins and having a reaction to them.

But this is actually good news. It means that whatever you are taking is working on those bad guys. But it makes you feel miserable. For a while, at least. You can feel like you’re in a fighting state, cos your body is working harder to fight these toxins. So you can experience flu-like symptoms, tiredness, rash, itch, chills, headaches, more mucus produced, diarrhoea or constipation.

Once again, what can possibly cause this Die Off Effect?

  1. When we stop eating processed foods and start eating real foods, so we kill off the baddies by starving them (cos they happily thrive and hold parties on processed foods).
  2. When we take probiotic in a large dose, so we kill off the baddies with these new armies of good soldiers3. When we take large doses of anti-parasitic, anti-yeast or antibiotic, and so we kill off the baddies by bombing them. BAM BAM BAM…

In all these actions above, you are making large but good changes to your gut flora. Whack those baddies out. A large portion of them. But when this happens, they release toxins and these toxins need to be gotten rid of! They cannot stay and have a party in our gut! When they do, we will experience the die off effect if our body doesn’t handle them well. But not everyone experiences it.

OK. So, what do we do?

Make sure you poo poo, k? Take enough fibre and water so you have enough taxi drivers around in your intestines to get rid of all the waste, along with the toxins. If I have not made myself clear by now, please note that you should be getting rid of all those toxins from the dying and dead baddies k?

And then, SLOWLY work your intake of whatever that was killing off those baddies up again. Slowly increase your dosage of LactoGG, or whatever that you were doing that caused the die off effect (like eating super potent kefir plus taking great amounts of probiotics at the same time.)

Also we should remember, that while these side effects are unpleasant, they are mild compared to those of many pharmaceutical drugs.
3 Ways To Reduce The “Side Effects” Of Probiotics
  1. Decrease the dosage
    1. One possible way to reduce the side effects is to reduce the dosage. If you were taking two probiotic pills daily, try taking only one probiotic pill per day. As your body becomes accustomed to the lower dosage, then you can increase the dosage to higher levels. But taking too many probiotic CFUs too quickly may result in probiotic overdose.
  2. Stay hydrated
    1. Water should help with all the side effects. This is because if you examine the list of side effects:
      1. Loose stools / Diarrhoea
      2. Gas
      3. Bloating
      4. Cramps
      5. Rashes
      6. Acne
    2. All of these side effects are ways your body detoxifies, or are signs that your body is having trouble detoxifying. And water is the ultimate detoxification agent. So to help you body detox, stay hydrated!
  3. Give your body time to adjust
    1. Taking probiotics can kill tons of bad bacterium, replacing them with the good. This can be quite a shock to our body! So give it at least two weeks of feeling the side effects. At that point it makes sense to seek medical attention.

More stories of little Percy’s experience with LactoGG from Mama Grace, a Member of the Baby Meadows Team

20th April 2011
I am absolutely thrilled that Percy has been on LactoGG for less than 2 weeks, and now, praise God, his eczema has improved by leaps and bounds! I am so grateful that Percy now can sleep without waking up (and crying, waking Papa and me up too) and he can play without stopping to scratch all the time! Jesus is so good!!! I am soooooo grateful!!! And Grandma just commented as I bathed Percy after he poo poo-ed, that he no longer fears bath-time, because he no longer has weeping, open raw wounds!!! Praise God!!! I’m awed by what a simple capsule of note: 20 Billion LIVE bacteria can do. Praise God!!!! Am just so excited!

7th Jan 2012
Percy was allergic to cow’s milk, and therefore all things dairy, and also to chocolate, nuts, chicken, and chicken eggs of course, prawns, crabs, scallops, and even some kinds of fish! But now he can eat almost everything without the hives popping out all around the mouth!!! Praise God!

His small little 3rd birthday cake last night somehow had cheese in it – a killer if he had taken it some months back. He still felt itchy after eating it, but it was nothing close to what he usually experienced after taking cheese – hives all over his face and neck, and the fingers that participated in the scratching.

I just found out that he can even eat REESE!!!!! That’s the super peanut-buttery chocolate covered confectionery!!! Plus chocolate! I was so angry when i realised that Peter, Percy’s Papa, gave him Reese, and usually before he takes food he is allergic to, I would give him LactoGG 15-30min before, but this time round, he took all these foods without! And he only had a few very small hives around his mouth! This is amazing, compared to what he suffered earlier!

In July last year, Peter had an egg-cracking session with the 2 boys, Perry and Percy. All Percy did was to crack an egg. Within 2 minutes, his whole torso was covered with thick hives! Even his armpits! I was so worried he’d not be able to breathe if the swelling got to his windpipe. Now, Percy can even EAT half boiled eggs with us! But just a little la. I am still very cautious, although Peter is much more adventurous with Percy’s food.

Another Recent Testimony from Grace’s Lunch Outings

A sweet lady who always makes Grace’s favourite roti prata in Parkway Parade (the mall just next to where Baby Meadows is located) spoke excitedly in a rush of Malay one day when I went to her to order my lunch. After her question was translated, I realised with joy that she was asking me for the name and telephone of my skin doctor. If you know me, I have practically given up on doctors, because of my gloriously exciting medical history (12 operations, with a few failed ones to boast of). And I had NOT gone to a doctor about my eczema since I went for a course of phototherapy DURING my pregnancy. She had noticed a marked improvement in my skin condition and had needed the contact because her own sister was suffering so badly with eczema that her skin had rotted, and her suffering was really indescribable. I told her about LactoGG 🙂

Fast forward 2 months: Nadin’s sister had almost completely recovered! Nadin is so happy that she pulls me on my arm every time I have my lunch at her place and excitedly tells me about how her sis is doing. 🙂

We wish you and your family the very best of health!

Warmest greetings,

Grace Ng & All of us here on the Health Champions Team
